Geothermal energy is energy obtained by the heat of rocks underneath the earths surface. In some parts of earth the rocks' temperature heats past 212° F . Geothermal energy is created by the rocks touching water and the water boils. Then, the boiling water is pumped to the surface where it turns into steam. The steam turns a turbine. The spinning turbine creates energy. The energy is sent to a distributor and the steam is sent to a cooling station. Then it is sent back to the earths interior. Because of this, Geothermal energy is a renewable resource, although some steam is lost through the process.
pros and cons
the benefits of geothermal energy are it is clean and sustainable. It is also energy efficient and low maintenance. A con is that it has major surface instability.
Catastrophes involving Geothermal energy
A Geothermal power plant triggered an earthquake in Switzerland. In fact many earthquakes are caused by power plants. A leading geothermal energy plant suffered an explosion.
Costs
construction of a power plant costs from about $3,000 to about $5,000. Geothermal energy is sold at a plant for about 0.03 per Kwh.
