What are biofuels? Biofuels are a renewable resource that is made from organic organisms. Biofuels are fuels that produces energy using ethanol, biodiesels, wood/wood waste and landfill waste. Biofuels are a renewable resource that is made from organic organisms. The website NREL states,”Unlike other renewable energy sources biomass can be converted directly into liquid fuels called, “biofuels” to help meet transportation needs.” Could it be that biofuels are the solution to the problem we have about using gasoline for transportation? Biofuels are produced by burning organic materials that have energy stored inside. The energy is converted into heat which produces energy. This process tends to be very clean and can become the alternative to gasoline.
Pros & Cons
Pros of biofuels:
- Biofuels are designed to replace fossil fuels which are nonrenewable.
- Biofuels make energy out of recyclable resources. (plants)
- Biofuels can be produced locally. ( In the U.S.A.)
- Biofuels do not produce a lot of energy in a long period of time.
- Biofuels have high costs to make and buy.
- Biofuels raise the price of crops.
- Biofuels could create food and water shortages.

To heat biofuels you need lots of water. If we use lots of water to heat biofuels instead of using it for other things, like drinking there could be many droughts. If a biofuel plant is put on land that has habitats the habitat will be destroyed. If habitats are destroyed than ecosystems crash. Biofuels are also made from plants. If plants are used to make energy not to be eaten, their price will go up. If prices go up on food less and less people can buy food which will make a lot of people go hungry
Cost
News
Biofuels have been thought out thoroughly. More money has been given to algae-based biofuels from the government. There has been an ethanol spill and biofuels have been more difficult and costly than thought. A new way to produce biofuels has been created. It is called Enzyme. Enzyme could create biofuels 14 times faster.
Fun Facts
Fun Facts about Biofuels:
- 25 million gallons of ethanol are made each year.
- 1 billion gallons of Biodiesel are made each year.
- Biofuels can power cars and other vehicles.
- The U.S.A. is the world's largest bioethanol producer.
- Biofuels can be made from animal fat.
